Meet the Lab

XAVIER SMITH

Roe enhancement has the potential to incentivise the removal of problematic urchins and facilitate kelp restoration on barrens. My Master's project made significant advances in enhancing the marketability of sea urchin roe by completing the first commercial-sized trial for the purple sea urchin which validated roe-enhancement techniques developed through laboratory experimentation. Additionally, I am interested in how intraspecific competition, cage designs, and nutritional factors influence the size and quality of sea urchin roe. In 2025, I'll begin working on a PhD at SALTT, focusing on salmon aquaculture.
